Stadtwirtschaft Weimar commissions Thuringian specialists for hydrogen refueling stations

Maximator Hydrogen from Nordhausen supplies system for Weimar city transport

Nordhausen/Weimar, March 1, 2023: As part of Thuringia's first Hydrogen Day at the Thuringia Exhibition, Mathias Kurras (CEO of Maximator Hydrogen GmbH) and Bernd Wagner (Managing Director of Stadtwirtschaft Weimar GmbH) symbolically signed the contract for the delivery of a hydrogen filling station to Weimar. The facility is scheduled to go into operation in fall 2023 and will supply the first hydrogen vehicles in the city bus fleet with green hydrogen. In this way, Thuringian green tech expertise will be implemented in close proximity and the model project for emission-free local transport will be further advanced.

After initially ordering three hydrogen buses for local public transport, the corresponding hydrogen filling station for the city of Weimar is now following. Maximator Hydrogen, a Thuringian specialist for hydrogen filling stations, won the public tender for the appropriate charging infrastructure for the model project. The two contract partners met at the first Thuringian hydrogen network meeting and sealed the partnership at the Thuringia Exhibition in Erfurt. "With Maximator Hydrogen's extensive experience, we are delighted to have a reliable technology partner at our side to make our goal of CO2-free local transportation a reality," says Bernd Wagner, Stadtwirtschaft Weimar. "We are delighted that we can draw on the expertise of a Thuringian cooperation partner, which also speaks for the innovative strength of our federal state."

Hydrogen technology from Thuringia for Thuringia

Maximator Hydrogen is a leading provider and developer of technologies for hydrogen infrastructures.

The young company from Nordhausen has established itself on the international market within a very short space of time and supplies hydrogen filling stations all over the world. In addition to various facilities in Switzerland or for a green hydrogen network in Sweden, for example, the company is delighted to now also be making its contribution to the 1.5-degree target in its own federal state: "We are grateful to be able to put our emission-free and reliable technologies into practice in our immediate neighborhood and provide the right infrastructure for climate-neutral urban transport in Weimar. We believe that model projects like this are the key to increasing the acceptance of hydrogen as the fuel of the future," says Mathias Kurras, Maximator Hydrogen.

The total investment in the climate-neutral filling station amounts to over 1 million euros. The project is being supported by the Thuringian Ministry of the Environment with funds from the ERDF program.

Patented technologies increase the efficiency of the plant

The heart of the planned plant is the MAX Compression System - a hydraulically driven high-pressure piston compressor with a two-stage design to compress hydrogen to up to 1,000 bar. The two compressor stages are each equipped with the patented Automatic Seal Exchange (ASX) technology. By automatically changing the high-pressure hydrogen seals, Maximator Hydrogen reduces service and maintenance costs as well as planned and unplanned system downtimes to an industry-wide minimum.

Model project with a future

The pilot project thus sets the starting point for emission-free mobility in Thuringian urban traffic and for further developments to achieve the climate targets. After the pilot phase with three vehicles, the city's entire bus fleet is to be converted to emission-free hydrogen operation. In the long term, Stadtwirtschaft Weimar plans to produce green hydrogen using its own electrolysis system.
